Note that OpenSSL is a stable ebuild, so you *shouldn't* be having trouble with it. The errors you posted before look like errors with portage. So if it fails, try this:
# emerge --sync && emerge portage \
&& emerge metadata && emerge --oneshot "=dev-libs/openssl-0.9.7e"
I will do this overnight, and reply again with the result.
All on one line. (Note that the 'emerge metadata' might actually be unnecc. -- I'm not sure.)
