Do you have a ntp server running? Otherwise, what is in /etc/adjtime? The first value is the daily drift. See the man page from "hwclock" for some information about how these values are calculated. I guess you've made a "big jump" by using hwclock to set the time, maybe because you switched from local timezone to UTC for the hw clock.
