Many folks have given you good answers... so I'll give you an answer that
doesn't really answer your question. ;-)
Instead of ftp, use ssh (sftp). Ftp sends plaintext passwords, which
exposes you to more ways to be cracked. Using sftp uses SSL encryption.
If you're already running an SSH server, then your users can already take
advantage of sftp. Windows users can use PuTTy (psftp).
