Well, I'd have to say that it is because Evolution-data-server also offers services to other applications. You know sharing calendar and contacts between applications (gnome clock/calendar, gaim, ...). And that is the behavior that most people, including me, want. I see no reason to collect contact lists and calendar entries for every application separately, and I think that the new system is a great improvement over the previous situation.
