I just tried setting my 'mono' and 'stereo' audio devices in xine to
"dmixer", and didn't seem to have any problem with it. This is not what
I normally do though...I setup the default alsa device to be "dmixer"
with an entry like this in my ~/.asoundrc file:
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm "dmixer"
}
This way every alsa application uses dmixer...no app-specific
configuration required.
But, are you by any chance using something greater than "stereo 2.0"
speaker configuration in xine (5.1 surround, for example?).

thanx a lot, after adding that line, xine works. but I still have to leave "dmixer" as the output device in mplayer, or the sound quality would be very poor.
I don't use anything greater than stereo 2.0, most of the time I use earphones or just use the speaker on my laptop.
