Not taking anything away from Vim, but elvis is very nice. As an embedded hack, I use old vi sources to put my favorite editor onto minimalisitc processor/embedded linux projects. Another use for old vi, is to put it as minimal editor on anything from dos to w2k when I have to work on MS based pc's you just make a /tmp dir, install a very old vi, and away you go. No need for cygnus (cygwin) or other large make overs on a MS-PC if you just want a functional, low level editor. My suggestion is go find the sources you like, and compile them for your target of interest, as plain old vi is likely to disappear as it was in BSD 4.2...
