Just 1 thought, there is a file called menu.lst in earlier versions of grub.  
In newer versions this is a symlink to grub.conf.  grub.conf must exist.  
Gentoo users a newer version of grub, I don't know about Suse, but debian 
still uses and older version which uses menu.lst
