First off, thanks to those who responded kindly, it is really appreciated. I feel very silly, but apparently the problem is the system itself. All this time I was testing for speed by connecting to it from another system, and fetching a file via ftp. I never PUT one until yesterday, and then I did get much higher speeds.
So it seems the server itself has some sort of major bottleneck going. It may just be too old, I wasn't exactly given speedy hardware to work with here. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
