Yeah, you're wrong :)

gentoo-sources are Gentoo's flavor of the vanilla-sources (which are the base).

They contain additonal features, like squashfs, vesa-tng, fbsplash, inotify...

Also some bugfixes and things like that.

They aren't "optimized" per se.
