In this case I'd suggest using IMAP. If your provider does not support IMAP you could easily set up your own local IMAP server. Since I first tried IMAP I can't imagine working without it anymore, as I have to access several mailboxes from different machines and keeping them all in sync would be horrible/impossible with POP3.
