And they didn't. The machine works fine now.

I still, however, have absolutely no idea how and why v4l devices get
created. I guess it's udev magic.

No, in my case ivtv was started but with the old tarball (I guess) the
v4l devices didn't get created.

Anyway, things are working pretty well now.
