What do you mean by "newer"? If it's gcc 3.4, it's not new, and it the best you can use. If it's gcc 4.0, don't use it. It's a complete redesign of gcc that will allow gcc maintainers to write better optimizing rules, but it's not ready for day to day use yet. It won't produce better code than gcc 3.4.
