Did you try to enable just switching to console before hibernating? There's a configuration entry in hibernate.conf (at the bottom). I found all suspend implementations being very similar (with the exception of ACPI standby, which works only in "light" mode - S3 - for me). So I'd guess it won't work much better with SS2.
