It's probably trying to restore a previous session.  There must be some way to 
disable it (I have it disabled for kde).

All of the font sizes are configurable, aren't they?  I had a similar problem 
and it turned out that I needed to set the monitor displaysize in xorg.conf.

Section "Monitor"
        DisplaySize 320 240
