Howdy,

I've been lurking on the grub threads here while trying to get grub
working for the past couple of months.

Let's skip my trials with w2k on s/w raid (that os is now archived ;),
lilo on a USB memory stick, 30+ hours of research, trials, errors, and
reboots.

The directions for creating a grub boot floppy were great. I used
the boot floppy method for over a month. But I finally got the system
into the state where off of the hard drive boot, I'd get the "Grub
Hard Disk Error". Googling turned up a suggestion I hadn't tried
before. First, dusted off a Win95 boot disk, then ran FDISK /MBR.
Decided to just try a boot to verify that the MBR was gone, but to
my surprise Grub started just fine. Thinking about it, my recent
attempts were to setup (hd0,0) which is for a partition boot, so
this made sense.

So I'm now booting grub from the hd, building new kernels, and
trying to figure out how to get udev working...

Thanks to all the grub gurus here! Y'all are wonderful!

Have fun,
Roy
