It should work to put it in /usr/portage/x11-base/xorg-x11, though it
would be deleted next time you sync, then. You could put it in the
portage overlay to avoid that.

Next time, before upgrading it, use 'quickpkg xorg-x11' to build a
backup package for it and then -- err, whatever it use to install from
a package and that version if you need to (I'm not on Gentoo right
now).
