Try to add the following to your kernel config:

Device Drivers  --->
    [*] USB support  --->
        <M>   USB Serial Converter support  --->
            <M>   USB driver for GSM and CDMA modems

If everything goes well, you should find something like /dev/ttyUSB0 in
your filesystem.
