Your guess was right!  I looked in .xsession-errors and checked for
"failed".

I found the following  msg many times

Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "gnomebreakpad": libgnomebreakpad.so:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Is that a clue?
