Even if it did work, I > would still like to log out normally. Um, Alt-SysRq-R alone does not do much. Have you tried Ctrl-Alt-F1 after Alt-SysRq-R? This works well for me, although only once - when I switch back to the hanging X, Alt-SysRq-R does not help again. Sure, this is no real solution, but better than Alt-SysRq-EISUB. Can you still log in from another system if this happens? Is there anything in syslog or /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Wonko
