tmux seems to be much more actively developed these days. That's my perception at least. A fact is that its codebase is lighter and simpler, and it has been able to do vertical splits for a long time. I don't know if that feature finally merged (in an usable status, I mean) in screen. -- Jesús Guerrero Botella
