I also have my own dns server on the machine, but actually, it seems the machine speaks to itself and need all functionnal concerning network BEFORE to launch any service. This is the same on kde (for example) : it will be SSSSOOOOOO slow when the network is bad configurated, whether you use the net or not, whether you are connected or not !
