Might be on to something there. I just changed the DISPLAYMANAGER to xdm and Xsession to xsession. That gave me a sort-of desktop, although I think there's some tweaking necessary on the mouse - it wasn't working correctly.
I'll go ahead and emerge kde, make the appropriate changes in rc.conf and see if that helps. Thanks for the ideas!
