Thanks a lot, that fixed it. Now it seems to work much better. Now I have to change some habits... such as when I switch to the console I may sometimes do "/etc/init.d/xdm stop", and "/etc/init.d/gpm start". Now I can't do that. It doesn't seem gpm has a .start file, so I guess I'll have to make one myself. Where do I add that?
