Do you have a backup dialup account like me? That's why I have
pppconfig, which pulls in ppp. Try "pretend depclean" and see what you
get. E.g...
#############################################
[d531][waltdnes][~] emerge -pv --depclean ppp
Calculating dependencies... done!
net-dialup/ppp-2.4.5-r1 pulled in by:
net-dialup/pppconfig-2.3.17-r1
#############################################
You might also want to try...
emerge -pv --depclean ppp pppconfig
