Try running this by itself:

emerge -1 sys-libs/readline:0 sys-libs/readline:5

That should upgrade readline-5.2_p12 to readline-6.2_p1 with SLOT=0,
and then install readline-5.4_p14 with SLOT=5.

You can then run your larger update, which should no longer produce
slot conflicts.
