poppler packaging is a pita, but it's never broke anything for me (but
does cause lots and lots and lots of stuff to be rebuilt...)
Yesterday's update worked just fine:
$ genlop -t poppler
* app-text/poppler
Wed Sep 18 08:46:05 2013 >>> app-text/poppler-0.24.1
merge time: 33 seconds.
Sun Sep 29 12:31:08 2013 >>> app-text/poppler-0.24.2
merge time: 35 seconds.
What errors are you getting?
Any customizations to poppler on your system?
(i.e grep -r poppler /etc/portage)
