Did you specify the correct file? I've read and re-read that make.conf file and I don't see anything wrong with it -- but my eyes are not so good lately. Is there a typo or something? Are the file perms okay? I tried chown-ing everything to portage:portage but that didn't change anything. I'm stumped.
