Ok, one additional finding:

sudo pidgin displays a starting dialog (account setup).
I did not proceed to not to "pollute" the installation
with root permissions.

I checked the implemented groups but found nothing 
appropiate to add my uid to.

Remains the one question: How can I fix it?
