In the meantime I found another solution. /etc/init.d/xdm did not actually start Xdm, but Kdm. In Kdm I could switch to the console by clicking a menu item with the mouse. Yet, I found the most satisfying solution when I ran into an emerge-dependency-resolution hell with KDE. I completely deinstalled KDE, and since I use SLiM I had not one crash any more.
