The proprietary graphics drivers were just too much hassle.
I've switched to the open source AMDGPU drivers + proprietary opencl[0] driver from the above version for my R9 390x. WIth this setup I can play most of my games at 2160p and still run BOINC for opencl. I also have Vulkan (RADV) in mesa-9999 from the FireBurn overlay.
