Which is also what encfs does, which is why I suggested it as a more
appropriate alternative. But ecryptfs does in in the kernel not
userspace.

ecryptfs can be very simple to use, but Ubuntu's implementation of it to
encrypt home directories does indeed seem "complex and opaque".
