Same happens to me. And always has.
I also tried every MTP tool in portage, and only found one (1) that
actually works: sys-fs/simple-mtpfs
And I suspect that might even differ from device to device. What works
for one device will probably not work for another. In general, MTP
support seems like a huge mess.
