This ebuild is using "EAPI=5".
Looks like it hasn't been updated in a while.

Profile 17 FORCES the use of PIE/PIC.
( -fPIC, -fPIE are appended to the gcc commands )

I suspect that the Profile 17 forced flags would have to be disabled
somehow.
Have no idea if that is possible.
