I was away from the machine a few days and todays emerge sync gave me udev 070 which solves nearly all problems out of the box. So the problem went away with the update. No need to investigate those links.
I had to add MODE="0666" to the rules files to get it usable for a user but that was all. After that pressing the hotsync on the cradle and then syncing with jpilot works fine.
