Similarly, you can go back to the main (?) screen while in programs that are using the alternate screen.
So if you have output on the screen that was hidden when you started vim / less, you can get back to it without exiting by Ctrl+Middle Clicking and unchecking the "Show Alternate Screen". - Then re-check "Show Alternate Screen" when you are ready to return.
Note: vim (et al) are still running and interpreting keybaord input even when Xterm is not showing the alterante screen.
