I'm not having your SMP problem but I did have the keyboard hang when I first tried going to SMP. In you have a USB keyboard available it will likely not have the problem. Someone on the LKML also suggested a boot option called 'usb-handoff' as a way to get it working, but I haven't tested that as switching to a USB keyboard was easy for me.
