Probably an upstream bug, but that release is the latest one, and it's from 1997. You could try emailing the authors Dmitri Shtilman <[email protected]> and Dmitri Makarov <[email protected]> whose email addresses I found in the FreeBSD port, but I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you.
