Okay, thanks for the advice, turns out rsyncd must be running for the rsync:// syntax to work. Next step, when I do an emerge --sync, I get " rsync: link_stat "/metadata/timestamp.chk" (in portage) failed: No such file or directory (2) 2005/10/28 17:18:57 [1266] rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(513)"
