Thank you to everyone who replied. I myself had a decent experience with AVG when I was running windows, so I am sure both it and clamav are up to the job. What tips the balance is the recent announcement by AVG that Linux is about to be brought to its knees by a devastating plague of viruses. This sounds like FUD to me and I don't like it.
