I think you need the 8.18.8-r1 for 2.6.14-gentoo kernels, at least that's what the ChangeLog for ati-drivers says (apparently there was a change to the ebuild *after* it was released originally, so the 8.18.8-r1 that's there now is different from the one that was originally released.)
