My system does this to when I forget to close some Firefox profiles and
start a update that includes LOo, the qtweb package or others, sometimes
a combination of those.  I first notice when the TV video appears to
pause.  Usually by then, it is to late.  Even if it tries to use swap,
it is so slow that the system rarely responds to any keyboard use even
if I try to switch desktops to stop or close something.  Most of the
time, the mouse pointer doesn't move either.  I usually sit there until
it crashes and reboots or I hit the reset button.

It is surprising that the Alt SysRq key sequence doesn't work either
tho.  The F option should kill memory hungry processes but even that
doesn't work.  This is another reason I want to upgrade my rig.  More
memory.  Current CPU speed isn't a deal breaker since I update while I
nap in a chroot most of the time.  Still, more memory and newer rig is
what is needed.

Even tho this isn't a fix, it might explain what the OP is dealing with.
