I do recall a good while back that somehow Wayland was selected on the login screen. I noticed it acting weird and logged back out. I then noticed it had Wayland selected somehow. I switched back and it worked like I expected. It was a while ago.
Wayland has problems remembering where windows used to be. It's something to do with the basic design of things - certainly a lot of things that were simple with X (because it ran as root) are a lot harder with Wayland because of its much more strict security stance.
