I'd like to understand how this works.  Is there any documentation of all this?  Meanwhile, as I understand it, because I installed from a live cd, the libstdc++ libs were i386-pc-linux-gnu architecture.  I used packages from the 2005.1 packages CD, so perhaps that is where they came from.

I've been having sporadic problems merging software.  Dillo was one, I think (maybe not).  And I think mozilla-firefox for a while.  I puzzled but got along ok.  When I finally have gotten around to update the system, compiling everything, the libraries were not properly indexed somehow on the system, requiring an extra step.

What is the function of the xyz.la file?

Are these changes likely to happen in the future as I do emerge -uDv world from time to time?

Thank you VERY much for your help.
