Hi folks:

ok -- we didn't get the snow day I was hoping for, but, I decided to go
ahead and work on the new install anyway. -- Call me crazy --

I am in the process of the build now, and am beginning to think about
software, and I am not sure that I understand how to properly install
stuff.

For example, there are programs from several different families that I
like and that I want to use. For example

From Gnome - I like Nautilus and gthumb (among others)
From KDE -- I like Konversation, Akregator, and DigiKAM
And from Generic (no specific family) I like Audacity and the Gimp

I am pretty sure most or all of these are in portage, so getting them is
no big deal. I will be running Fluxbox, and I would like the programs
with all their proper features, without the extra bloat that installing GNOME and KDE would bring. Can someone please advise on the proper way
to go about doing this???

there is a very good howto on kde in the documentation on the gentoo.org site. I point you in that direction because it mentions a bunch of possibilities, and I don't recall them all. however, a google for "site:gentoo.org kde" should net you the relevant stuff. basically kde (can't speak to gnome, don't care for it) is broken into lots of ebuilds. I personally did an emerge kde-meta, because I use the full-blown kde. but there's also smaller bits you can install.

Always do an emerge packagename -pv first, as it will evaluate your USE flags and tell you what prereqs it'll install.

Thanks
