Have you ran revdep-rebuild -p . It may be a broken dependancy.
Also notice that the new kmail is part of this:

kde-base/kmail-3.5.0-r3 (/usr/kde/3.5/bin/kmail)


You may want to reemerge kmail as well. Oh, equery belongs kmail. I went to the menu editer and got the command used to launch Kmail then asked who it belonged to. Kmail used to belong to kdepim but KDE changed all that I guess.

Hope this helps. Sometimes it take a working system to fix a broken one. ;-)
