but compiling kde or ooo is a better ram test than memtest86, which is known 
for false positive and not finding obvious errors.

cpubburn puts some stress onto cpu&northbridge.

For harddisks - dd if=something (like urandom) of=something else 
bs=whatyouwant count=at least some gigabytes while smartmontools are 
installed and smartd is running + copying around some big files.
