I guess I just solved the issue ;-)
/etc/conf.d/rc
RC_PARALLEL_STARTUP="yes" => "no"
My guess is that something was seriously messing it up during the
parallel startup! After changing this to "no" (default) and rebooting
(tested 3x) it works perfectly every time.
