The sound stopped working on my wife's computer about a week ago. I've
run every test I can think of and can't seem to track the problem
down. /etc/init.d/alsasound starts up fine. I can run alsamixer on her
computer just fine (on my computer, when ALSA isn't working I can't open
alsamixer); she has the volume control applet running on her panel, but
there simply is no sound. I looked over dmesg, but didn't notice
anything out of the ordinary. I'll post it here in case I missed
something.

She uses alsa-driver.  From /etc/make.conf:

catherine ~ # cat /etc/make.conf | grep 'ALSA'
ALSA_CARDS="intel8x0"

She's never had a problem with sound before. At first I thought maybe
her speakers had come unplugged, but sound works perfectly in Windows.
I know the ALSA packages got upgraded several days ago, but I'm pretty
sure she'd rebooted (and in the process restarted alsasound) and the
sound worked. I'm not sure though. She often boots into Windows to
play Yahoo games that don't work in Linux. Can anyone help?
