Just two more tips....for 1920x1200 resolution, you will need to add: svga.maxWidth = 1920 to the .vmx file for your virtual machine. Otherwise it maxes out at 1600x1200. Also I recommend using the Gentoo ebuild, rather than downloading directly from vmware. It will include support for the newest kernels, and also integrate with Gentoo's init scripts.
