I'm assuming your reference to VSFTP is based on my recommendation of vsftpd. vsftpd stands for very secure file transfer protocol daemon, but make no mistake: This is an FTP daemon. The 'very secure' isn't referring to a protocol, they're just saying their daemon is very secure.
